As you know, the holiday season is one of the best times of the year to raise money for your animal shelter. And since we’re now in December, it’s time to organize another round of holiday fundraising. You’ve probably got more fundraising ideas than time to execute but if you need a few more creative ideas to get donations rolling in, we’ve got you covered.
In this article, we’ll help you make the most of the festive season with our 7 creative holiday fundraising ideas for animal shelters.
Planning a special event to celebrate the holidays is a great way to increase donation dollars. In past years, you may have hosted an in-person potluck party, cocktail night, or secret santa event. But recent years have taught us that online events can be fun and successful! Make sure to invite staff, volunteers, and supporters to the virtual event and charge everyone a small entrance fee.
The Homeward Pet Adoption Center in Seattle has done just that with their fun Virtual Ugly Sweater Holiday Party.
Creating a rescue pet calendar that showcases your shelter animals is a fantastic way to raise money. After all, what animal lover wouldn’t want a calendar full of cute pet photos? Canva is an easy-to-use online design tool with a collection of amazing free calendar templates. Simply snap some pictures of your shelter animals (or enlist the help of a professional photographer who’d be willing to donate their services), upload them to Canva, and use the drag-and-drop editor to create your design.
Check out Canva’s calendar templates page for full instructions on designing and printing your calendar. When you’re done, make sure to promote your calendar far and wide to maximize sales. It’s also a good idea to ask local businesses if they’d be willing to sponsor the project.
Everyone loves a good raffle, and the holiday season is the perfect time to hold one! Reach out to local businesses and ask if they’d be willing to donate small items you can raffle off. You can then promote the raffle on your website and social media pages and sell tickets for a few dollars each. Online raffles are a great option for 2020, and they’re quick and easy to set up. Forte Animal Rescue in Los Angeles is promoting a holiday raffle on their website, with options for buying tickets through PayPal or Venmo.
Pet sponsorships make wonderful holiday gifts for animal lovers who can’t adopt pets. Set up a sponsor-a-pet page on your website and promote it to your audience. We recommend asking for recurring donations on a monthly or annual basis. When someone signs up, make sure to send regular updates to help build an emotional bond. It’s also a great idea to offer chances to visit the pet at the shelter.

Why not raise funds for your animal shelter this holiday season by offering pet photos with Santa? Recruit a volunteer to dress up as the festive icon and find a local photographer who’d be willing to donate their time. Next, set up a simple holiday-themed “studio” at your shelter. All you need is a backdrop and some festive decorations like ribbons, wrapped presents, and fairy lights. Finally, invite pet owners to come and have their pets’ pictures taken with Santa. Charge a few dollars for each photo and hand out doggie bags with festive treats to sweeten the deal!
Everyone loves festive treats, so consider hosting a bake sale this holiday season. Simply ask shelter staff, volunteers, and supporters to bake their favorite treats and collect donations for the tasty goodies. Make sure to promote your bake sale a few weeks before the event on your website and social media pages. You could even hand out flyers in your local area to encourage more people to join in on the fun.
Make the most of the generous festive spirit by organizing a holiday donation drive. The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland has made it super easy for supporters to help raise funds by creating a Holiday Donation Drive Toolkit. It includes printable donation drive signs, a donation drive checklist, and online wishlists for easy shopping. Why not do the same for your animal shelter and watch the donations come flooding in?
