Hard to Place Pet Marketing Pays Off

Have you ever tried something new in your group or organization? It can be hard (and really scary!) to implement new or untested policies, pet adoption marketing ideas, or outreach events. The fear of failure is real.

But sometimes what appears to be a failure at first turns out to be a huge win. In the case of Rita, a hard to place senior dog, it was the conclusion she’s waited for her whole life… finally finding her perfect forever home.

The Webinar That Helped a Hard to Place Pet Find a Home

We recently teamed up with Petfinder for a unique series of online educational opportunities. For our first webinar, we asked you, our animal welfare professionals’ community, what you wanted to know most, and you answered: tools to help hard to place pets get adopted.

We heard you loud and clear and created an online seminar chock full of tools, tips, and templates on digital tools and marketing methods to help your hard to place pets find forever families.

After the webinar, our attendees flew into action; re-writing profiles, updating photos, and even creating new outreach events to showcase hard to place pets.

Which is how Rita, a senior dog from Path of Hope Rescue who has waited her whole life for a safe and loving home, finally found her forever family.

“That One” Hard to Place Pet

On arrival, it was discovered Rita was heartworm positive and already coughing, indicating advanced stages of the disease. The veterinarians prepared the Path of Hope Rescue team for the worst, but Rita was a fighter. After undergoing a slower version of treatment, Rita became heartworm free in just four months.

A foster family was found for Rita but soon the behavior issues arose from her time as a stray dog, fighting to stay alive on the streets. Path of Hope Rescue did not give up on Rita and found a trainer to help her pro bono. Under the training of Courtney’s Canine College, Rita went from a dominant bully trying to stay alive, to trusting her new human leaders, and even playing for the first time in her life.

But more troubles plagued Rita: a lingering cough that indicated congestive heart failure, the fact she could be the only dog in a home… she had been with Path of Hope Rescue now for 14 months without a single real adoption prospect.

One Lightbulb Moment Leads to an Adoption

This is when Caitlin, Executive Director, and Founder of Path of Hope Rescue, saw our Tools to Help Your Hard to Place Pets Get Adopted webinar and everything changed.

“There was a lot of great information, but one fact that was shared immediately struck me: ‘Adopters are willing to overlook issues if they can meet the dog first and form an emotional connection.’ Rita had become a sweetheart, but no one knew that. And because of our application first methods, no one ever would.”

Caitlin changed that and immediately created an outreach event at a local brewery for “Long Term Residents” only.

“Because of a rainy day, it was very poorly attended,” remarks Caitlin. “But Rita stole the show, making sure every single person who was there knew just how snuggly and loving she was. Someone there texted their friend: YOU HAVE TO COME MEET THIS DOG.”

Guess what? The friend did come to the event. His name is John. He fell in love with Rita and shortly after, he adopted her.

“Rita’s journey took almost her whole life,” says Caitlin. “Shelters United and Petfinder directly helped Rita find her happy-ever-after and we are so grateful to organizations that care enough to help support us in what we do.”
