Boehringer Ingelheim and Shelters United to improve access to preventive veterinary care for shelter animals

Duluth, GA, Tue, 11/04/2025 – 10:00

  • As part of the collaboration, Shelters United members will have access to PUREVAX®, RECOMBITEK®, and IMRAB® canine and feline vaccines, improving the health and well-being of shelter animals
  • Effective preventive veterinary care for shelter cats and dogs sets them up for healthier lives when they find their forever homes

Boehringer Ingelheim has entered into a strategic collaboration with Shelters United, a group purchasing organization supporting animal welfare groups. The shared aim of this collaboration is to improve the health and welfare of shelter dogs and cats by providing more than 2,800 member organizations access to high-quality pet vaccines by Boehringer Ingelheim including the PUREVAX® range for cats, RECOMBITEK® range for dogs, as well as the company’s IMRAB® rabies vaccines.

Rescue organizations in the U.S. need support to serve their missions

There are around 14,000 animal welfare organizations throughout the United States1. Animal shelters and rescue organizations often rely on donations and volunteer work to carry out their important missions. When every cent counts, high quality veterinary medicines can be out of financial reach. However, preventive care is as important for them as for any other pet, if not more.

“In 2024, around 5.8 million cats and dogs entered shelters and rescues across the nation. Many shelters are spread thin due to declining adoption rates and longer stays2,” shares Mal Schwartz, Founder of Shelters United. “Our collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim will enable our members to better access vital veterinary and preventive care, helping them serve their missions more effectively.”

Vaccines are cornerstones of preventive care for shelter animals

Animals awaiting adoption often live in close quarters with other animals and can be at an increased risk of infectious disease. To further compound the issue, new arrivals may be entirely unvaccinated, making prompt immunization against the most common infectious diseases a priority—to protect the animal in question and all others in the shelter3.  This helps safeguard cats and dogs before they find their forever homes while also setting them up for a healthier life with their future families. That is why the collaboration between Boehringer and Shelters United makes such a positive difference.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Shelters United and help animal welfare organizations prevent life-threatening infectious diseases in cats and dogs through our legacy of vaccine excellence,” comments Daniel Watkins, Head of the U.S. Pet Business at Boehringer Ingelheim. Shelters United members can purchase Boehringer vaccines starting in January 2026.
