Shelters United Unveils Groundbreaking Online Toolkit to Transform Veterinary Care for Rescues & Shelters

Table of Contents

CARMEL, CA — Shelters United has just revolutionized the landscape of animal welfare with the launch of VetOfRecord.com, a first-of-its-kind toolkit empowering shelters and rescues to secure affordable, high-quality veterinary care through strategic partnerships with veterinary professionals. This innovative resource paves the way for a brighter future for pets awaiting adoption, offering a vital solution to one of the most pressing challenges in animal welfare today.

VetOfRecord.com is more than just a website—it’s a game-changer for shelters and rescues striving to give abandoned and neglected animals a second chance at life. By providing a dedicated platform for building and strengthening relationships between animal welfare organizations (AWOs) and veterinarians, the toolkit addresses a critical need: access to essential care for pets in transition.

Why Now? Why This Matters

Animal shelters and rescues face an uphill battle. Many operate on shoestring budgets, unable to afford in-house veterinary staff, while others struggle to find vets experienced in shelter medicine. At the same time, veterinarians often lack the tools and guidance to collaborate effectively with AWOs. VetOfRecord.com bridges this gap, creating a win-win for shelters, vets, and—most importantly—homeless pets.

The Shelters United Veterinarian Of Record toolkit is a groundbreaking collaboration between Shelters United and the University of Florida’s Online Shelter Medicine Program, made possible by generous funding from PetSmart Charities. Thanks to this dynamic partnership, shelters and veterinarians now have access to a free, transformational resource designed to foster impactful collaborations.

A training program is set to launch in Q1 2025 with additional support from Mars Veterinary Health. Shelters United will provide free training to participating veterinarians and animal welfare organizations, equipping them with the tools to build enduring partnerships. These collaborations aim to not only enhance animal welfare but also inspire a ripple effect of compassion and care across the community.

Changing the Landscape of Veterinary Care

This is more than a toolkit—it’s a blueprint for revolutionizing how shelters and veterinary professionals work together to save lives, rehabilitate animals, and inspire change in the neighborhoods they serve.

“Our VOR Toolkit is a breakthrough for shelters and rescues. With support from PetSmart Charities, we’re able to provide clarity for both veterinarians and rescues on developing productive relationships and minimizing the conflicts that often occur. The VOR Toolkit provides the tools needed to establish a memorandum of understanding that defines the relationship and responsibilities for all parties. This will enable rescues to provide affordable, life-saving care,” said Mal Schwartz, Founder and CEO of Shelters United. “Investors and partners can see this as a scalable, high-impact solution in animal welfare.”

Toolkit contents include:

  • Relevant definitions and tips on finding the perfect partnership
  • Details about how to respectfully establish a positive relationship between a rescue and a veterinarian to expand access to care, including a template for a memorandum of understanding (MOU)
  • Tips for managing disagreements constructively
  • Recommendations to develop a joint marketing plan
  • Resources for AWOs and VORs, including a video primer on legal and liability issues from Mark Cushing, founder and CEO of the Animal Policy Group

“This new toolkit will help us expand the number of VORs, and, thanks to generous funding from PetSmart Charities and Mars Veterinary Health, we can train veterinarians so they can rehabilitate homeless pets so they’re better positioned to find their forever homes,” said Schwartz.
