Bill Bennington

Founder, Institute for Nonprofit Excellence

Bill Bennington, who has been associated with INPEx for more than 20 years, brings extensive experience in all aspects of senior-level management and consulting, covering corporate, educational, nonprofit, and public sector organizations. Bill’s experience spans a broad spectrum of relevant activities, including more than 35 years as a marketing and communications executive, a trainer of over 25,000 leaders from more than 6,000 organizations worldwide, one-on-one organizational development facilitator with upward of 450 organizations and institutions (including numerous human service, health related nonprofits and NGO’s) and the development of tools and techniques used by the grant-making community to analyze potential grantees.

Bill has been widely recognized by, and has received numerous awards from, business, civic, and charitable organizations and professional societies for his work in developing innovative programs, and for his planning, organizational, communications and universal management expertise. In June of 2010, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation created a $10,000 Award in his name to be given annually to the North Carolina nonprofit organization that best exemplifies his character and the lessons he has taught to more than 1,000 charity leadership teams in that state over a 10-year period.

In 2002, he was named one of Business Leader Magazine’s top-100 business leaders in the Raleigh/Durham Research Triangle area. In October of 2003, a corporate university offering five fully accredited college degrees created by Bill for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina received a BEST Award from the American Society for Training and Development. In 2004, the training organization he developed and led was named #30 on Training Magazine’s coveted Top 100 List and was also a recipient of the magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award.

Bill has served as an officer of four billion-dollar-plus corporations, including Vice President, Communications, Community Affairs, Training, and Organizational Development, for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, and Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, for Colonial Penn Group, Inc., Philadelphia. Prior to that, he was Worldwide Director of Public Information for ITT Corporation in New York, and also served as Vice President, Communications, for The Allen Group, Inc., New York. He has served as a director of several public corporations and as a member of the President’s Council of Gwynedd Mercy College.

A graduate of the University of Dayton (B.A.-Journalism), he is often asked to lecture before communications societies, nonprofit groups, and professional organizations throughout the nation and globally (including the board of Mercy Ships, the widely known medical ministry that operates the world’s largest hospital ship). He is a co-founder of the Institute for Nonprofit Excellence, through which he has provided training to teams of more than 6,000 nonprofit organizations worldwide. He has served as an officer and member of nearly 40 for profit and nonprofit boards of directors in the U.S. and abroad.
