Mal Schwartz

Founder

Mal loves what he does – making the world better for homeless pets. In creating the Shelters United GPO, Mal’s goal was to stretch the budgets of shelters and rescues nationwide so they can care for more animals. The mission of INPEx has always been to help nonprofit animal shelters and rescue groups save money by sourcing manufacturer and distributor discounts on products needed to heal, protect, and adopt out healthy pets. With Shelters United, the team launched the latest platform to help bring our mission to life, with great partners like MWI Animal Health, Virbac, The Association of Animal Welfare Advancement, Blue Buffalo Vet Diets, Provecta and more. In the many years Mal has been supporting animal welfare, he has never been as excited about a program as he is about Shelters United! That’s saying a lot, when you consider that it was in 1978, as an agency for General Foods, that he first got involved in animal welfare. Mal had been assigned the responsibility for changing the very negative dynamic between pet food manufacturers and animal welfare organizations. He then attended his first shelter conference and met some of the best people on earth! He looks forward to every HSUS Expo, MWI Connect AH, and Association conference, having become good friends with the great people who have evolved shelter management to a new level of effectiveness and credibility. Some programs that Mal has been instrumental in providing include Homeless Homer Adoption Kits, PETelethons, Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue, Hill’s Food, Shelter & Love, Revolution donation program, and Zoetis for Shelters. Playing an active role in growing the professionalism of SAWA, Mal used the INPEx database of shelters and rescues to produce the first few years of the SAWA Resource Directory. This helped make the fact-based case for the enormous influence that shelters and rescues have on the pet parenting population. Pets are an indispensable part of Mal’s life. When his late wife passed away after 33 years together, he believed Bernie, a lab/border collie mix he adopted from the ASPCA in NYC, saved his sanity. Mal was chair of the Delta Society (Pet Partners) and volunteered with Bernie as a therapy team at the Children’s Hospital giving him a purpose and an anchor to hang on to.

Mal and his wife, Laura, live in Carmel, California, with their cat, Zephyr, and Thor, a 120-pound Great Pyrenees/Collie mix they adopted from the Monterey SPCA.
